Warrior Games 2017

The 2017 Department of Defense Warrior Games is an adaptive sports competition for wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans. Approximately 265 athletes representing teams from the United States Army, Marine Corps, Navy/Coast Guard, Air Force, and Special Operations Command, as well as athletes from international partner nations, the United Kingdom Armed Forces and the Australian Defence Force, will participate in eight sporting events: archery, cycling, sitting volleyball, shooting, swimming, wheelchair basketball, track and field. The Warrior Games highlight the resiliency and strength of our service members, veterans and their caregivers.

Throughout the week of competition, wounded warriors will compete in archery, cycling, track, field, shooting, sitting volleyball, swimming and wheelchair basketball. Army Trials showcase the resilient spirit of wounded, ill and injured Soldiers and veterans. Participants include athletes with upper-body, lower-body and spinal cord injuries; amputations; serious illnesses; traumatic brain injuries; visual impairment and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Athlete Journey

Each wounded, ill and injured Soldier has their own unique story and journey to recovery. By competing in the 2017 Department of Defense Warrior Games as part of Team Army, these brave men and women continue to prove their strength and resiliency. The Games are an opportunity for athletes to showcase their competitive edge, develop lasting relationships and heal, both physically and mentally.

Team Army’s Soldiers started out competing in unit level competitions for a chance to move on and participate at their regional trials. Top regional trials’ competitors were invited to compete at the Army Trials at Fort Bliss, Texas from April 2-6, where they worked with expert coaches, sports trainers and nutritionists and competed for a chance to represent Team Army at the DoD Warrior Games. 40 athletes were selected to Team Army based on their professionalism, team spirit and event performances and will go on to compete at the 2017 DoD Warrior Games in Chicago from June 30 - July 08.
